Yan (Mona) -Li brocade weaving techniques. With strong determination to preserve and pass down such precious cultural heritage, Yan started her journey of collecting information on Li brocade weaving skills and putting them into writing with illustrations. During the ten years between 1995 and 2005, following her love and passion for Li brocade, she traveled deep into five Li dialect areas in Hainan Province, China, including Wuzhi Mountain, Li Mother Mountain, Baisha, Dongfang, Changjiang and Ledong. The Li people are divided into five different population groups in terms of the dialect they speak: Qi, Ha, Sai, Meifu, and Run. Yan visited over 100 Li female weaving masters, and lived with them to learn different Li brocade weaving techniques such as spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidering. She worked side by side with Li people on chopping down bamboo, making weaving tools, tilling the land, picking peanuts, and brewing sweet rice wine. After 10 years of hard work, the first draft of her book was completed in 2010. The book records steps and specifications on Li brocade’s draw-warping, raising heald, weaving techniques scattered in five Li population groups that she visited.
